The Internet is an amazing advance that allows quick and easy connections across the globe. Many businesses, small and large, are able to conduct business with end consumers in a more efficient manner.

Is it easy to become a victim?

It is if you don't use caution. If you go to a high crime area alone and flash cash, you are more likely to become a victim than not. You have to use the same caution when using the Internet. Once you realize that there is a potential for illegal behavior on the part of some, you can protect yourself.

There are some scams that send emails which look legitimate. Sometimes the fraud is not as readily apparent as it is in the "real world". People generally feel safe when they are in their home, so they tend to lessen defensive thinking.

Is the Internet safe?

The Internet is not safe or unsafe. It is simply a tool. Tools can be used for productive purposes. They can sometimes be misused to steal from or hurt others.

The Nigerian 419 scam is an example of a scam that can be simple left or can go as far as kidnapping/murder of the victim. These scams are easy to recognize with the proper instruction. There are numerous tools to keep these scams away from your notice.

Can you reduce your risk of being a victim?

Absolutely. It is not difficult to protect yourself, once you have the proper knowledge and tools. The best tools will perform the tasks automatically, to prevent the possibility of human error.

Is it expensive to protect yourself or your business?

Generally, no. Even in instances that require an investment hardware or software, the prevention of theft and loss makes up for the initial expense.
